Building an online presence can feel like a full-time job. As a business owner, you’re already wearing all the hats – and now there’s social media demanding your time, not to mention energy too.
You know it’s important. You know it helps people discover your business. But figuring out where to start (and how to make it worth your time) is so overwhelming.
The good news? Social media doesn’t have to take over your week. With a few small shifts, you can work lighter – not harder – and start seeing results from the time you invest.
Here are 5 common mistakes I see new or growing businesses make on social media – and how you can avoid them in 2025.
1. Trying to Be Everywhere at Once
When you’re starting out, it’s tempting to jump on every platform; Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn. But spreading yourself too thin often leads to burnout and inconsistent posting.
The fix? Focus on 1-2 platforms where your ideal customers spend most of their time. Build your presence there with intention and consistency. Once you’ve nailed those, you can branch out if it makes sense for your brand.
2. Posting Without a Clear Strategy
Random posts = random results. Without a strategy, it’s hard to build trust or achieve real business outcomes.
Ask yourself:
- What do I want my audience to feel, learn or do when they see my content?
- What problems can I solve for them?
- What’s my tone and style? How should it feel when they visit my account?
This is where I help businesses simplify. With clear content pillars, a posting schedule, and a strong brand foundation, your marketing feels less like a chore and more like a nautural extension of your business.
3. Overlooking Brand Personality
People don’t buy from businesses, they buy from people. your brand voice, tone, and visuals should feel unmistakably you. Are you warm and grounded? Professional and educational? Or playful and vibrant? The “little things” add up – your colours, fonts, spacing, even where your text sits on an image. That’s why I design starter branding kits for clients. They give your business a cohesive, recognisable look across socials, your website, and marketing materials.
So even before people see your name, they know it’s you.
4. Underestimating the Power of Professional Photography
One of the biggest game changers for small businesses? Beautiful, intentional photography?
Take my recent shoot with The Barn Bathurst 2795 as an example. Together we captured:
- The atmosphere of their retail space
- Seasonal product displays that felt warm and inviting
- Behind-the-scenes details that shared their story
Those images became the foundation for:
- A seasons worth of social media posts
- Updated website banners and product pages
- Canva backgrounds for reels and carousels
- Email newsletter and seasonal promotions
- Advertising and PR material for other brands such as ‘Bathurst and backroads’
There are no rules. great photos can be repurposed again and again across all platforms. investing in professional photography each season means you always have fresh, on-brand content ready to go. Remember to file it so you can find them all (that’s another topic haha).
4. Underestimating the Power of Professional Photography
“Set and forget” isn’t a strategy. The most successful busineses regularly check their insights to see what content performs best.
You don’t need to be a numbers expert – I help clients interpret their analytics in plain language so they know what to keep going (and what to let go of).
